According to the annual report of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) released on Thursday, January 30 by the president of the Court Dean Spielmann, Greece is in 7th place for recorded human rights violations.
In particular, the annual table of violations of the Convention on human rights shows that the State with the highest number of judgments was Russia (119 judgments), followed by Turkey (118), Romania (83), Ukraine (65), Hungary (40), Italy (34) and Greece (32).
In the ECHR’s press conference, it was mentioned that on December 31 2013, the majority of pending cases were against Russia (16.8%), Italy (14.4%), Ukraine(13.3%) and Serbia (11.3%).
President Spielmann stated that “in 2013 the Court’s work has been quite remarkable as we have continued to build on the progress made in 2012.”
“At the start of this year the number of pending cases stood at 99,900. This again reflects a considerable reduction from just over two years ago, when the total was in excess of 160,000,” he continued.
The president of ECHR thanked the states for their contribution in the special bank account that was set up in order to strengthen the financial function of the Court.
The states which have already contributed are Andorra, Austria, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. President Spielmann urged all member states of the European Union to contribute as well.
